Cyclones' drive for youngsters in need

Redcliffe Cyclones’ junior cricketers have driven a major fundraising campaign to help local youngsters in need.

Several hundred dollars of groceries and more than $300 in vouchers were collected and presented to Hercules Road State School Breakfast Club.

Run by ‘Chappy’ Nathan and volunteers, the club gives hungry children a good breakfast before starting the school day.

“A big thanks to the Redcliffe Cyclones for their generous support,” Nathan said, “on behalf of the school, it’s very much appreciated.”

Cyclones use the Hercules Rd State School fields for matches and it was a call by Nathan to club president Neal Smith which started the campaign.

Jumped on board

“Hercules Rd very generously allows us to use their cricket fields,” Mr Smith said. “Nathan called to ask if we needed the fields on a certain date.

“We got chatting and once I learnt they were having a cricket match and fundraising for the breakfast club, Cyclones couldn’t wait to get on board.

“Whether its school or a game of cricket, kids need a proper breakfast.”

Cyclones used Facebook for the appeal and players, some Hercules Rd students, donated cereal, pancake shakers, strawberry jam, vegemite and long-life milk.

There were also sizeable donations from The Lakes Cricket Club, Albany Creek Hawks and Peninsula Cricket Club.

Great result

“We are only a small club, but we help out the community whenever we can,” Mr Smith said.

“We always try to support those in need and those that support us. It was a great result from all involved.”

The annual Redcliffe Cyclones Community Trivia night is on Saturday March 4 at 6pm, at Redcliffe Harness Club.

Tables of eight are $240 which includes canapés. Prizes, raffles and full bar on the night with proceeds to Cyclones for equipment and Hercules Rd Breakfast Club.
