Eatons Hill-Samford safety road upgrades to start
Construction will begin in the coming weeks on the $75.2 million Strathpine-Samford Road Route Project (SSRRSP) to provide a safer connection between Eatons Hill and Samford Valley.
Safety improvements will be made to Eatons Crossing and Mount Samson roads.
Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will work with Moreton Bay City Council (MBCC) to deliver wildlife protection measures to minimise the impact on native fauna.
What is happening
* Road widening to accommodate new wide centre lines providing more separation between oncoming traffic and reducing the risk of head-on crashes
* Creating wider road shoulders to provide more space for bike riders and extra room for all road users to safely navigate the winding and steep terrain
* Upgrading various intersections including installing signals at the Eatons Crossing and Lilley roads intersection to control all turning vehicles and improve traffic flow
* Installing safety barriers at numerous locations and removing roadside hazards, including clearing some vegetation
* Painting bike symbols and green lanes through intersections to improve safety for bike riders
* Buidling new dedicated police enforcement bays.
TMR is also working with MBCC to deliver parts of their Green Infrastructure Network Delivery Program (GINDP) including 4.7km of koala-proof fencing, koala escape poles and fauna underpasses, in addition to eight LED koala signs already installed along Eatons Crossing Rd.
Most work will happen during the day from Monday to Friday between 6am and 6pm. Motorists are encouraged to find alternative routes, where possible, with up to 15-minute delays expected along Eatons Crossing Rd.
Growing need
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says traffic is continuing to grow on Eatons Crossing and Mount Samson roads.
"Sadly we've seen many serious road crashes here, including three fatalities since 2012, which is why we're improving safety for the 14,000 motorists who travel this route each day,” he says.
“This $75.2 million investment by the Palaszczuk Government will better separate oncoming traffic, provide more room for cyclists and make way for more police enforcement.
"The project will deliver safer intersections at more than 10 locations along Eatons Crossing Rd with dedicated turn lanes and new signals at the Eatons Crossing and Lilley roads intersection to better manage traffic flow.”
State Member for Pine Rivers Nikki Boyd says: "These upgrades have been designed with public feedback in mind regarding motorist behaviour and safety, particularly at intersections such as Lilley Rd.
"This investment will not only improve safety but support our commitment to deliver good jobs and better services for Queenslanders with an average of 115 direct jobs expected to be supported over the life of the project.
"We're also pleased to continue working with Moreton Bay City Council, with the Queensland Government providing $4.5 million to support delivery of their Green Infrastructure Network Delivery Program (GINDP).
"For this project we're installing koala-proof fencing and escape poles and the community can rest assured that any wildlife awareness road markings removed during construction will be reinstated”.
