Free community fun day to celebrate completed lake and park in Newport

A free community fun day will be held in Stockland Newport this Saturday to celebrate the completion of the 22-hectare lake and the opening of the new children’s playground.

The Newport Lake Festival of Fun will include games for the little ones, a face painter, a balloon artist, live music, roving stilt walkers and food trucks.

Kayaks and pedal boats will also be available to hire for free from 12pm, allowing locals to explore Newport Lake and its waterways.

The celebration will be capped off with a fireworks display on the water at 6.15pm.

Timeline of the new facilities

Newport Lake was built in two parts, with the second section being filled earlier this month, in time for Saturday’s celebrations.

Construction of the lake began in 2015, and now spans an area 540-metres long by 137-metres wide – and at 20 metres is almost as deep as the length of a cricket pitch.

Since the first part of the lake opened in 2018, locals have made the most of the community’s waterside location with sailing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.

The lake also features an innovative lock system, allowing high mast access to Moreton Bay and beyond.

Stockland Senior Development Manager Blair Britton said the lake was a beautiful space for locals and visitors to utilise.

“Newport Lake is a beautiful attraction and fantastic recreational facility for people who enjoy boating and water sports with direct access to Moreton Bay,” Blair said.

“The lake has become a renowned hotspot for stand-up paddling and kayaking, so we are delighted to see the lake grow, giving more residents and locals access to Newport’s centrepiece.”

Lakeview Park is the fifth park to open in the community, with a 110-metre stretch of lakefront access.

The new 6,670 square metre park includes a playground with an agility course and climbing walls, a fitness zone as well as barbecues, shelters and picnic tables.
