Free upgrade for recycling bins

Moreton Bay Regional Council is offering residents a free larger recycling bin – but householders will have to pay slightly more.

The offer is to try and increase Moreton Bay Region’s recycling rate and reduce the amount of waste going into landfill sites.

Those getting free larger bins will see a total yearly residential rate rise of $6 or $13 depending on your existing bin size, or $7-15 for commercial rates.

“We’ve received plenty of feedback from residents wanting more environmental initiatives, so this is just one way we’re delivering for our residents,” Mayor Peter Flannery says.

“The last time we promoted the free recycling bin upgrade service, we actually ran out of bin stocks and had to reorder!

“In total we have delivered over 910 larger recycling bins to locals which has saved ratepayers more than $52,000 in fees that would have otherwise been charged, since we introduced the service in August 2021.

“While there’s a very minor servicing fee attached to this, the bin itself is free, which is a service that isn’t offered by all Councils.”

“I love that our residents are so passionate about recycling and the environment, and we want to encourage that behaviour as much as possible.

“Moreton Bay’s recycling rate is roughly 45 per cent and we want to see it raised well above 60 per cent, so this is just one initiative, along with our announcement for a new Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service in the future, that will help us protect our beautiful region.

“If you’re unsure of what you can put in the recycling bin you can visit Council’s website to find out more, so we can all work together to increase our recycling and protect our beautiful Moreton Bay.”
