Ozcare residents lose their locks for a good cause

A number of residents from Ozcare Ozanam Villa in Clontarf have shaved or coloured their hair to help raise money and awareness for the World’s Greatest Shave.

A total of 24 aged care residents and staff took part in the event on March 16, raising more than $3000 for the Leukemia Foundation.

Ozcare resident Deb Owen was the one who helped drive interest in the event, which was a first for the villa.

One of the people brave enough to shave their head was 85-year-old Val White. Val was inspired to lose her locks after watching her daughter go through her own cancer battle.

“I have not been touched by Leukemia, but I think any cancer makes you stop and think of all those affected and the families who are affected and need support,” Val said.

Ozcare Facility Manager Aeron Kennedy said it felt good to raise money for a worthy cause.

“It was a very rewarding experience to reach our fundraising milestone and finally have our heads shaved – we had grown our hair out for about six months,” Aeron said.

Ozcare registered nurse Sally Young underwent her third shave for the charity, with hairdresser Leith Hawthorne wielding the sheers.
