Redcliffe Computer Club hits record members

Redcliffe Computer Club’s membership numbers have hit an all-time high, reaching 400.

The club has been running for nearly 20 years and has operated from several different locations on the peninsula, including at the Redcliffe Library and the old scouts hall at Sportsground St.

Now located in the old council building in Irene St, President Alan Reeves says the club aims to teach students basic computer skills and how to stay safe on the internet.

“It’s very rewarding to give a student one hour of our time, knowing that they walk away with skills that allow them to navigate through the technical minefield of the internet and how to use computers, tablets and phones,” Alan says.

As the club grows, Alan is hosting an open day on Friday, October 20 to show the public what members do.

“The open day is designed to allow the public to see our premises and be shown around by our tutors in a guided tour. We have confirmed that Councillor Sandra Ruck, Councillor Karl Winchester and MP Luke Howarth will be dropping in on the day for a look around.

“We are also hosting a giveaway on the day, which is open to both members and guests.”

The giveaway prizes include a 1TB hard drive, a 128GB OTG USB, a mouse and keyboard and three free lessons.

The Redcliffe Computer Club is also registered at Centrelink to help train jobseekers and supply basic training on computers.

Alan Reeves says the club usually find tutors through the Seek Volunteer website, but they welcome anyone from across the peninsula.

“We are always on the lookout for tutors. They don't have to come from a technology background either, as a lot of our senior members just want to learn the basics and how to stay safe on the internet. We also teach a lot of phone use,” Alan says.
