Showcase match to help launch women's masters

Plans to launch a Women’s Over 35 Masters competition in South-East Queensland will take an important step forward at Brendale tonight.

Players from Aspley Hornets, Kedron Lions, Ferny Grove Falcons and Moreton Bay Lions, which have held Masters QuickKick sessions – will stage a demonstration match at South Pine Sports Centre.

Starting at 6.50pm and held over four 10-minute quarters, the match is to showcase the game to players from the expanding AFL Masters QuickKick program.

The fixture and program are designed as a precursor to the launch of a women’s masters competition next year, mirroring the successful men’s masters.

Entry level

Masters football is social, results are not collated into league tables.

AFL Masters QuickKick is described as an “entry level program for women over 35 who want to play footy”.

It is “safe, friendly and casual, and designed to teach the basic skills of football (marking, kicking, handpassing) as well as the rules of the game”.
