Superstar Cate joins fun at open day

Cate Campbell, a superstar of Australian swimming, was the special guest at Southern Cross Swimming Club’s Open Day on Saturday.

The triple Olympian spoke to a packed Scarborough pool, answered questions, signed autographs and posed for pictures with youngsters.

Campbell has multiple world records to her credit as well as four Olympic gold medals from London 2021, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

She also has four World Championship gold medals, nine Pan Pacific golds, six Commonwealth golds and 14 silver or bronze medals from those games.

However, Campbell said her favourite moment came in the 2016 national trials when she and sister Bronte finished first and second in the 100m freestyle inside strict qualifying times.

Southern Cross captains presented Campbell with flowers and hand-written cards and letters from club members. President Steve Birch thanks her for coming.

Free training

Earlier, coaches Jayden Hadler and Yvonne Bosch held a one-hour squad taster session and after Campbell's visit the slippery slide opened and free swimming was available.

Campbell follows Tokyo Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus and Mitch Larkin, also a World, Pan Pacific and Commonwealth champion, as guests at Southern Cross Open Days.
