Who’s Who in 22, Sport: Mick Roberts

Redcliffe Dolphins Hostplus Cup assistant coach Mick Roberts not only helped guide the side to a Grand Final in 2022 but has been rewarded with a full-time job developing young players as the Dolphins enter the NRL.

In October, Dolphins NRL announced its coaching structure which included roles for Roberts, Ben Te’o and Scott Murray transitioning players from the Queensland Rugby League competitions into the NRL team.

It followed a successful 2022 season for the three coaches whose teams played in Grand Finals and who mentored players who now have full, development or train and trial contacts with the NRL squad.

Roberts has joined the NRL Dolphins full-time as Academy Skills Coach.

The Dolphins legend, who has also been working as a teacher, is now with the club full-time developing the skills of Dolphins Academy players.

Under the leadership of Academy Head Kurt Richards, he will assist players aged 15-19 years in preparing for the graduation to NRL pathways.

Roberts has been involved in coaching at the Dolphins for many years but also the under-16 Queensland State of Origin side.

At school level, he coached Wavell State High School’s Langer Trophy winning side this year.

About Mick Roberts

Roberts finished high school in Mackay in 1997 and came to Redcliffe to play for the club for the Dolphins’ Colts side.

Roberts played in 221 games for Redcliffe in the Queensland Cup, scoring 71 tries and a total of 552 points. He was part of the 2006 Dolphins’ premiership-winning side. Roberts is Dolphin No.481.

He made his NRL debut, with the Brisbane Broncos in 2007, after toiling in the Queensland Cup for 10 years.

Roberts went straight into coaching after he finished playing, coaching the Colts.

There have only been a few years since moving to Redcliffe that he hasn’t been actively part of the club - when his daughter was born.

Roberts is passionate about the ‘family-friendly-focused club’ and excited there is now a genuine pathway for players to progress to the NRL.

His new role puts him in the box seat to identify talent and work with players to make that happen.
