Who’s Who of 2022, Music & Arts: Redcliffe Art Society
Artist Elizabeth Duguid took out the coveted top prize at the 2022 Redcliffe Art Society Exhibition of Excellence by impressing the judges with a spectacular painting titled Dusk at Bribie Passage.
Out of 60 submissions presented by members, Elizabeth’s painting was the one that impressed the judges the most.
She was one of 27 winners whose artistic talents were recognised in the annual art competition and placed on display at the Redcliffe Art Gallery for the community to view.
Redcliffe Art Society President Janice Charlish told Moreton Daily she hoped the community would once again support the gallery and the exhibition, saying “there were lots of wonderful pieces” to admire.
About Redcliffe Art Society
The Redcliffe Art Society (RAS) has been encouraging artists to enjoy practicing their work as well as learning an array of new skills since 1957.
The RAS was first based out of the Ace of Clubs Arcade, which was its headquarters for several years.
The very first exhibition in 1957 was called The Clontarf Beach Art Contest.
The following year, the exhibition was renamed The Woody Point Art Contest before it was changed to The Redcliffe Centenary Art Contest in 1959 to celebrate Redcliffe being named a city.
The very first meeting of RAS was held in December 1960, but it wasn’t until 1961 that RAS was officially constituted as the Redcliffe Art Contest Society with membership invited.
That same year, a monthly newsletter was produced, which continues to this day.
The RAS then amended its constitution in 1981 which saw the group become the Redcliffe Art Society Incorporated.
In 1983, the RAS moved into a church building at Margate before relocating once more in 1986 to the Redcliffe Leagues Club building which was located at Lamington Drive at the time.
Today, the Redcliffe Art Society can be found at the Old Fire Station Community Arts and Volunteer Hub at Oxley Rd – a place it has called home since 2015.
For 65 years, the Redcliffe Art Society has hosted its annual Exhibition of Excellence awards and it remains a calendar favourite, bringing together the best works by society members from the past year.
The pieces are put on display the Redcliffe Art Gallery for people to admire and vote for to determine the winner of the People’s Choice Award.
Redcliffe Art Society President Janice Charlish spoke to Moreton Daily in August about the 2022 awards, saying at the time she was extremely impressed with this year’s submissions.
“There were lots of wonderful pieces submitted this year by our talented artists,” Janice said.
A total of 60 artworks were submitted as part of the competition.
In addition, The RAS also hosts regular art workshops taught by some of Australia’s premier artists in a variety of media.
