Work starts on Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade

Preliminary work has started on the Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade at Bald Hills.
The work, to relocate utilities such as gas and electricity, is expected to take place outside of peak hours and is not likely to disrupt traffic.
Jointly funded by the federal and state governments, the $176 million upgrade will increase the overpass height from 4.7m to 6m and boost Linkfield Rd to four lanes between the intersections at Gympie and Lacey roads.
Raising the overpass follows weeks of traffic delays and a restriction on heavy vehicles after it was struck twice by vehicles twice in 2022 and again in July 2023.
It aims to improve safety and freight access, and boost opportunities for active transport.
The project design includes a new separated pathway for pedestrians, riders and other users, and a new on-road cycle lane for cyclists.
Significant infrastructure
Queensland transport and main roads minister Bart Mellish says the upgrade will provide better connections.
“With the start of underground utility relocations, we are seeing the next steps towards construction of this significant piece of infrastructure,” Mr Mellish says.
Pine Rivers MP Nikki Boys says the Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade will help reduce congestion.
“I know residents will be excited to see diggers on site as the first significant step in upgrading the Linkfield Road Overpass to four lanes,” Ms Boyd says.
The Federal Government will spend $125.5 million on the project, while the state will chip in $50.5 million.
